Since 2018, we’ve provided ongoing grants of Roweepra® (levetiracetam) to Healey International Relief Foundation, which works through its local partner Loreto Health Services (LHS). LHS began working with epilepsy patients in 1997 and currently has more than 5,000 patients. Most of them are treated at the LHS clinic in the northern city of Makeni. In 2021, ROW also provided a grant for a TeleEEG clinic installation at LHS, tentatively scheduled for this fall.
Vicki Middleton, Healey’s Government Relations Officer, recently visited Sierra Leone and witnessed the appreciation patients have for the staff and how access to treatment is changing their lives. Many told of the stigma they faced in their villages. With medications like Roweepra, their seizures are being reduced or eliminated, helping them to be accepted by their communities, to receive an education, and to support their families.
During Vicki’s trip, we received several video testimonials that showed the difference Roweepra is making. Watching these videos was a great encouragement. One young man had been having five seizures daily for more than a decade until they were completely controlled by Roweepra. He’s now seizure-free and couldn’t help smiling when he said so. Other videos had similar inspiring stories. We are truly fortunate to be partnered with Healey and LHS and to play a part in their important work.
