Earlier this year, ROW launched the Amanda Award to honor the memory of Amanda Brooke de los Santos, who passed away from seizures at a young age. Each year, ROW will award a grant to an organization with a track record of achieving meaningful results in addressing untreated epilepsy.
ROW is happy to announce that the recipient of the 2019 Amanda Award is Guiding Light Orphans (GLO) (https://www.guidinglightorphans.org) in Masindi, Uganda. Jolly Lux, GLO’s Executive Director, was born and raised in Uganda and came to the U.S. in 2000. During a return trip to Masindi, she was confronted with the many children orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In response, Jolly and her husband Kurt founded GLO in 2013 to make a difference in these children’s lives. GLO began holding medical camps to deliver basic health screenings, immunizations, education and disease prevention.
GLO identified many young children affected by epilepsy, which resulted in them frequently missing school. Other children were fearful of the seizures and teachers did not know how to respond when they happened. To address this, GLO launched an epilepsy program in 2015 to raise awareness about epilepsy and improve understanding, treatment and services.
GLO held its first epilepsy-specific medical camp in April 2015, treating 156 patients. GLO now holds monthly clinics and provides access to medication for more than 200 people with epilepsy. The $2,500 Amanda Award will help cover the costs of locally available medication, for which GLO pays about $3.50 per month per person, including the cost of distribution. You can learn more about GLO’s epilepsy program at https://www.guidinglightorphans.org/epilepsy-program.
GLO presents a chance to make a very big impact at a very low cost. You can participate in GLO’s work by making a one-time donation or a recurring monthly gift to help GLO purchase and distribute epilepsy medication. A monthly donation of $35 will support the full cost of providing medication for 10 people on an ongoing basis. Learn more or donate at https://rowpharma.org/donations/.
